Tommy Thompson

Officially dropped out of the race: August 12, 2007

Where's he from? Wisconsinite Tommy Thompson, grew up in a small town where his father ran a gas station and a small grocery store. Tommy studied undergrad at the University of Wisconsin and then went on to graduate with a law degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Law before beginning his political career in 1966 as a Wisconsin State Assembly representative.

Political resume? Thompson was elected to four straight terms as Wisconsin governor between 1987 and 2001. Tommy left office when President George W. Bush appointed him the Health and Human Services Secretary.

What's he known for? During his time as governor, Thompson supported a school voucher system and created a health care plan to provide coverage to all uninsured children in Wisconsin.

Hot issues? When it comes to the issues, Thompson’s top agendas are the war in Iraq, health care reform, and foreign policy.
