Tom Tancredo

Officially dropped out of the race: December 20, 2007 Early years? From Denver, Colorado, Tom Tancredo was an active member of the College Republicans at the University of Northern Colorado where he earned a political science degree. After graduation, Tancredo worked as a teacher before being elected to the Colorado House of Representatives.

What's he known for? Tancredo’s opposition to bilingual education marked much of his early political career, and when President Reagan won the election in 1981, he was appointed the regional representative in Denver for the Department of Education. In 1998, Tancredo was elected congressman and is now serving his fourth term.

Hot issues? Immigration reform is at the top of Tancredo’s to-do list, and also among the issues are gun control and the war in Iraq.
